5 Tips to Feel Confident & Natural in Front of the Camera
Let’s be honest: the phrase “Okay, just act natural!” can be the quickest way to feel completely unnatural. If the thought of being photographed makes you feel stiff, self-conscious, or unsure of what to do with your hands, you are so not alone.
As a portrait photographer, my greatest goal isn’t just to take a technically perfect picture. It’s to create an image that captures the real you—your spark, your warmth, your genuine smile. And that all starts with helping you feel comfortable and confident.
So, whether you’re preparing for a branding session, a family portrait, or an engagement shoot, here are my top 5 tips to help you shine in front of the lens.
1. Trust Your Photographer (We’re On Your Team!)
This is the most important tip. Choose a photographer whose work you love and whose personality you connect with. Once you do, let go of the reins. A good photographer will guide you through every step—from posing to location. We’re not just clicking a button; we’re curating light, composition, and emotion. When I say “lean slightly forward” or “think of something that makes you laugh,” there’s a reason for it. Your job is simply to trust the process and focus on feeling, not performing.
2. Move, Don’t Just Pose
Static poses can feel awkward. The magic often happens between the poses. So sway, walk, twirl your dress, adjust your sleeve, or laugh at a bad joke. Movement creates flow, natural body lines, and those beautiful, unguarded moments that often become your favorite shots. Don’t worry about being “in position” at all times. Authentic motion translates into authentic photos.
3. Focus on a Feeling, Not a Face
Instead of thinking “smile for the camera,” think of a memory or a feeling. Recall the way your partner proposed, the ridiculous thing your kid said yesterday, or the excitement you feel about your new business. Your eyes will soften, your smile will reach them, and your entire face will relax into an expression that is uniquely and beautifully yours. I’ll often chat with you to help draw out these genuine emotions.
4. Wear Something That Makes You Feel Amazing
Confidence starts with how you feel in your own skin. Choose an outfit that you love, that fits well, and that represents your personal style. If you’re constantly pulling at a strap or worrying about a tight waistband, it will show. Pro tip: Practice in your outfit! Move around, sit down, make sure it’s as comfortable as it is beautiful. When you feel good, you look good—it’s that simple.
5. Embrace the “Imperfections”
That little crinkle by your eye when you laugh? That’s a life well-lived. The way your hair falls naturally in the breeze? That’s real beauty. The goal is not a stiff, “perfect” mannequin shot. The goal is you. The connection, the story, the genuine emotion—these are what make a portrait timeless. So take a deep breath, let your shoulders drop, and just be. You are enough, exactly as you are.
Remember: A photoshoot should be an experience, not an ordeal. My studio (and on-location) is a no-judgment zone designed for you to feel safe, celebrated, and ultimately, confident.
